Snoring & Sleep Dentistry

Ema ApplicationSnoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Snoring is the sound of partially obstructed breathing during sleep. While snoring can be harmless, it can also be the sign of a more serious medical condition known as Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). When Obstructive Sleep Apnea occurs, the tongue and soft palate collapse onto the back of the throat and completely block the airway which restricts the flow of oxygen.

Facts
  • Approximately 1 in 5 adults have at least a mild OSA and 1 in 15 adults has moderate to severe OSA.
  • OSA suffers are 3 times more likely to have automobile accidents than non-suffers.
  • There is NO other disorder as life threatening as Apnea which goes undiagnosed.

Signs of Sleep Apnea
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Loss of energy
  • Morning headaches
  • Waking up tired or thirsty
  • Snoring

Untreated, Chronic Sleep Apnea Can Contribute To:
  • High blood pressure
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Memory problems
  • Weight gain
  • Impotency
  • Headaches

Standards of Care
In addition of lifestyle, such as good sleep hygiene, exercise and weight loss there are three primary ways to treat snoring and OSA: CPAP, Oral Appliance Therapy, and Surgery.

Oral Appliance Therapy
Oral appliance therapy involves the selection, fitting, and use of a specially designed oral device worn during sleep that maintains an opened unobstructed airway in the throat.

Because Dr.Hughes is certified in oral appliance therapy, he is familiar with the various designs of appliances. He can determine which one is best suited for your specific needs. Dr.Hughes will work your physician as part of the medical team in your diagnosis, treatment and on-going care.

If you have been diagnosed with Obstructive Sleep Apnea and are intolerant of a CPAP , and oral device may work for you !
